Dwarf Fruit Growing Opens New Income Stream in Thrace
Beyond traditional field crops, the dwarf (intensive) fruit growing model is rapidly spreading in the Thrace region. Thanks to low-height, closely planted trees, yield per hectare increases; harvesting and maintenance costs decrease.
Fruit orchard projects initiated with state incentives in Edirne and Tekirdağ have opened new income streams for farmers. Thanks to cold storage facilities, sales can be made outside the harvest season; product prices can be maintained.
Karfrut and Fruti, which have been practising dwarf fruit growing since 2006, operate more than 950 decares of modern production area in the region. The company maximises yield per decare with methods such as drip irrigation and trellis training.
